Hemorrhoids are a common medical condition, with over 50% of people over the age of 50 suffering from them at some point in their life. Some symptoms to be on the lookout for are: bleeding while using the bathroom, itching, burning and pain or discomfort. For most people, hemorrhoids aren’t usually serious and won’t present much of a problem, but, left untreated, they may get worse and untimely require surgery, and this is why early diagnosing and treatment is so important.
Here are the 3 best things you can do to avoid getting hemorrhoids:
1) A high fiber diet. Eating more fiber is, without a doubt, the single best thing you can do to prevent hemorrhoids. Fiber reduces straining while using the bathroom, promotes regular bowel movement and softer stools – all of which are essential in the prevention of hemorrhoids. Ideally you should be able to get enough fiber from your diet alone by eating more fruits, vegetables and high fiber grain, but if you’re finding you’re still not getting enough fiber even with an improved diet, then a bulk fiber may be your next best option.
2) Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Not only is drinking water recommended when trying to lose weight, but it also helps the body process the extra fiber you’ll be eating. It will help to make stools softer and easier to pass thereby decreasing stress on the anal canal.
3) Exercise. Our culture has become increasingly sedentary, not only do we spend a lot of time sitting at work, but most of us aren’t getting the exercise and movement we need outside of work. If you spend large amounts of time sitting, you’re at a greater risk of developing hemroids. It’s recommended that for every hour you spend sitting, you should make a point of getting up and moving around for about 5-10 minutes. This helps reduce stress on the anal canal and gets the blood flowing.
